Long journeys on horseback were the norm of yesteryear’s gauchos and even today it is still the best way to explore the vast expanses of the Argentine Pampas.
With this trip, we offer you a unique and unforgettable horse riding trip that will bring the gaucho’s journeys from village to village and Estancia to Estancia to life. This is how the poet and novelist Ricardo Güiraldes describes it in his book Don Segundo Sombra: “I would have thought it possible to go on thus indefinitely, without thought, without effort, rocked by the rhythmic movements of my horse… feeling the heat of the sun on my back and shoulders”.
11 am | On your midmorning arrival at the Chacra de San Andres, which is located on the edge of the small village of Villa Ruiz, you will be warmly welcomed by Marcelo and Nando. After sharing some mate with your hosts, they will introduce you to the Criollo horses who will be your companions for the trip and they will also show you the gaucho equestrian equipment.
After a light lunch (beef or chicken sandwiches and fruit) we will depart on horseback through fields and trails, towards the village of Azcuénaga, located about fifteen kilometers away.
5 pm | After about four hours on horseback, we’ll arrive at a small hostel (*) in Azcuénaga, where we’ll spend the night after enjoying an asado meal (selection of meats, grilled on an Argentine BBQ with salads and soft drinks or/and wines).
(*) El Arbol Caido: there are two rooms to choose from; one double and one with capacity for up to 8 people.
9 am | We’ll have breakfast then saddle up for the second day of the journey!
12 noon | After a further 10km, we’ll arrive at the small hamlet of Vagues, where you’ll discover the old train station and have a rural lunch.
2 pm | Then it’s time to say goodbye to your horse and friendly gaucho companions as our driver takes over and delivers you to the charming town of San Antonio de Areco, a 10-minute drive away.
2-4 pm | Tour of San Antonio de Areco, capital of Gaucho culture. Your driver will give you great tips on what to look out for.
