The Border Collie, gaucho’s best friend?

The Border Collie, gaucho’s best friend… after his horse?

The Border Collie has also become an inseparable friend for the gaucho. It is an athletic sheepdog, always active in order to help its owner to keep together the herd.

Where does it come from?

The Border Collie appeared a few centuries ago on British Islands. This breed of dog was imported by the Scandinavian colonists when they came to Ireland and Scotland’s border area to settle down. Its name takes on its full meaning as “collie” means “useful” in Gaelic. Used on account of its important working skills, the Border Collie was the Vikings’ ideal comrade.

What does it look like?

This dog may have different appearances (sand colour, blue merle, brown…), but the most common one remains a black and white fur, the white never dominating the black.

Its metabolism seems to have been specially conceived for livestock farming and work. Its weather-resistant fur, its sharp-eye, its innate agility, its amazing strength, its incredible capacity of concentration and intelligence are distinctive features allowing the dog to be a seasoned and tireless worker.

How to define its personality?

The Border Collie is not only a fast, lively and docile dog. It is also one of the best dogs ever. It is able to recognise long-distance routes. It has a bright mind as well as with a rare concentration capacity.

Sociable, the Border Collie is a pleasant company. A Border Collie will never turn to be aggressive, even if it might be naturally fearful. Thanks to its faithfulness towards its peers, its loyalty, humility and herd instinct, it is very appreciated by everyone.

But the animal is above all, very happy when it is doing its job.

What are its assets?

The Gauchos can’t get enough of them. The Border Collie works quickly, and you are guaranteed a job well done. Keeping together a herd in a stable, separating the ewes from the cows, tracking lost bullocks, are some of the many activities these dogs are bound for. They are a considerable gain of time and workforce.

They have a nonstandard obedience. Most of the time, a few words are sufficient to make them understand what they are supposed to do. Very clever, they can keep a lot of information in mind in a little bit of time. Words such as: “down”, “left”, “right” are the only words necessary to handle a herd efficiently.

Finally, the Border Collie provides an essential security for gauchos. Accidents related to livestock farming activities are frequent and happen every day, everywhere. This sheepdog is very vigilant. Using a Border Collie is the best option for the security of the farmer as any contact with the herd will be avoided.

It is essential to stay vigilant though, this breed of dog, sensitive to stress, can sometimes get in health troubles if it is put under high pressure.

To conclude, if you are planning to get a Border Collie, you have to make sure to be in the ability to provide him with open space, work and attention. Once these conditions are gathered, there is no doubt you will live wonderful experiences with man’s best friend.
